Help me give my students calculators to prep for the mathematics section for the ACT. We also love to do timed bellringer challenges daily in class for bonus points!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach charismatic tenth-grade students at a Title I school in Jackson, MS. My students mean the world to me and I want them to excel in all of the goals they have beyond my classroom. The majority of my students participate in extracurricular activities and they are star players, musicians, cheerleaders, etc. They work hard and they are eager to learn and succeed.
My Project
The mathematics portion of the ACT is one of the most important sections on the exam. The math section has a total of 60 questions and is timed for 60 minutes, so that leaves a crunch in the allotted time to ensure all questions have been answered. Therefore, my students know the importance of time management when testing. So, the calculators will be highly beneficial to my star students on their journey to ace the ACT. We also incorporate activities such as daily bell ringers, which are timed and competitive.
I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are competing in the bellringer challenge and I would like to continue the positivity.
The first student to get the answer correct and show his or her work on the board wins a chance for an extra 50 points. The points are added to his or her lowest grade or the points can be spread across multiple grades. The lap boards will aid in the bell ringer challenge, so students have the opportunity to write the correct answer, show his or her work, and display it during the class session. Making sure my star students are properly equipped and challenged prior to testing is vital for their success.
