My students need puzzles and activities that will provide daily math practice in patterning, place value, counting, problem solving, calendaring, estimating, and counting money.
Imagine making dinner without the use of any cooking utensils. What appears to be a simple task is quite daunting without the right tools. This is what math is like for my autism students. A simple problem can be quite impossible-but with the right support, students can solve problems successfully.
The students in my classroom range in ages from 5 years to 12, covering grades K-5th.
My classroom is a self-contained autism classroom. Due to the severity of my students' disabilities, they are not able to attend classes with the general education students.
Most of my students have varying degrees of mental impairment. Due to their neurological disorders, they become very frustrated when they are given challenging problems to solve with out the proper supports and tools to solve them. Unfortunately, many of the resources that my students need cannot be provided by our county due to limited finances.
My Project
The Calendar Math activity, math links, and counting money puzzles will enhance my students' problem solving abilities. These hands-on materials will provide daily math practice - from counting and patterning to place value and problem solving. These materials have everything I need to reinforce calendar and money concepts. The students will be able to use manipulatives to skip count, estimate amounts, and count coins and bills.
Most of my autism students have mental impairment.
They do not learn at the same pace as peers their age. My students need the Calendar Math Activity Program, math links, and counting money puzzles to enhance their learning and to motivate them to learn needed math skills.
