My students need floor seating for independent reading like bean bags and cushions. They also need new tables and chairs that enhance collaboration and can be arranged flexibly to use our library space in many ways.
I'm so fortunate to know this amazing group of bright, passionate, funny, and caring young people. They are from an area of North Portland with vibrant groups of Latinx, African American, refugee, and immigrant neighbors from around the world making their school one of the most racially diverse schools in the Portland area. They love graphic novels and manga, computer games, music, art, and learning with each other.
These students care about their world, but most importantly they care about their siblings, extended families, friends, and local community.
They deserve a school library that is welcoming, bright, fun, as technologically advanced as they are, and a place for learning collaboratively. Making our library a space designed with them in mind will have an incalculable benefit on their growing love of literacy and learning.
My Project
Our library is the heart of our school, but unfortunately, our space and equipment aren't as exciting or student friendly as they could be. My students need a comfortable space for relaxing with a great book as well as a flexible space to study and work together on projects. Clean, bright, and new furniture communicates to them that we believe they deserve the very best.
Right now our students enjoy our library space in spite of the equipment there, but we need to attract them to this calm learning environment.
Students are easily distracted by wobbly chairs and tables. Without cozy seating options, they sit on top of shelving which results in more negative interactions with staff. My students need floor seating for independent reading like bean bags and cushions. They also need new tables and chairs that enhance collaboration and can be arranged flexibly to use our library space in many ways. By meeting these physical needs students will be encouraged to use the library as the space it was intended to be.
As a school with historically underserved populations, we struggle to counter the narrative of persistent underfunding. In a learning environment without proper equipment in good condition, it is all too easy to feel unseen, unimportant, and forgotten. Your generosity reminds our students that their education matters - THEY matter.
