I work with the English Learners in our school. They are a diverse and hard-working group of students. A glow day is an engaging day of learning and practice that adds a little extra excitement to the practicing of the content by using black lights and bright materials in game-like stations.
Our English Learners put in extra effort to learn both content and language, and they deserve to have fun and engaging opportunities too.
These glow day materials can be used for multiple different subjects, can be used several times a year, and can be used for glow days for students in the years to come. This year, I teach my students math and science, but the possibilities are endless!
A glow day is typically done after students have learned a concept and works well for review days. I am particularly excited to use this for math class. Many of our middle school topics (evaluating expressions, solving equations, solving inequalities, fraction operations, etc.) require students to apply what they've learned and take time to solve, so many traditional review games which require a quick answer do not work well for math review. During glow day stations, they make have task cards, puzzles, or open-middle problems to practice the skill. Upon successful completion, they may earn a mini-game or a small glow-item reward. Teachers who have done glow days often report the glowing environment alone leads to greater engagement.
