My students need transportation to the movie theatre
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I want sixth and seventh graders to experience history through a movie, and not just read about it in a script so we will watch Selma. We will discuss the obstruction of voter registration for African Americans, "bloody Sunday" and how the strikes & non-violent protests helped change the laws..
I teach at a public Title 1 middle school in Decatur, Ga in which the demographics consist of minority students, mostly African-Americans.
We have about 980 students in the school. The academic range of our students range from gifted students to those who perform poorly in school. I am always looking for ways to assist them with their speaking and writing.
These students will write an essay or rap/song about what they have learned about the march and civil rights during the 60's. Plus they will write a 1st person essay that shares the feelings and thoughts of someone who participated and experienced the March to Selma.
With it being the 50th anniversary of the "March at Selma" this month, I thought students learning more about it would be very appropriate.
One thing the movie depicts is that laws can be changed if people work together to fight the system. This is what people of all colors did during the civil rights movement. This project should help students understand the great sacrifices that people made in order for all people to have the right to vote as well as equal rights for all.
