Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach music to 650 children ranging from age 4 to age 8. When it is time for music, my students cheer! They know it is a time to create, explore and discover all about music. Together we experience the joy that is music!
Many of my students come from families who are unable to pay for enrichment activities.
Parents work hard to support their children, but finances are needed for basic daily living.
Our primary chorus consists of over 100 children from first and second grade. We sing, dance and act as we present two musicals each year. It is such fun to entertain our fellow students, teachers, friends, and family.
I start each day with a smile knowing I will be seeing my students each day. They bring that smile to my face because of their sweetness and genuine mutual love of music.
My Project
My kids come primarily from low income households, and do not always have access to instruments. A chance to play on accompaniments on a simple glockenspiel would excite the children about creating music.
This will give my music classrooms a start with having the opportunity to use a barred instrument.
As a music teacher who travels on a cart from class to class, a small barred instrument will be easy for me to bring around as a visit my different classes each week.
Using a barred instrument will give the children a chance to work on rhythm, beat and harmony. They will get a chance to take turns trying out the instrument, and hopefully this will be a start to adding some more barred instruments into my available resources for my kids!
