Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Eager, adventurous, and ready to grow up, my 6th graders come to me with big dreams and high hopes. However, attending school in a district where providing daily breakfast and lunch for every student is necessary means that many of my students must trade the opportunity to experience places outside of their neighborhoods and comfort zones for the local, familiar, and necessary. While their enthusiasm and optimism is inspiring, many of my students struggle academically. Many have backgrounds as non-native English speakers and some are reading far below grade level. We can work very hard in class and they do, but every year, we struggle to get the supplies that we need to help us be our very best.
As a Social Science teacher, my curriculum allows students to connect to the experiences of people across time and space.
Students learn about the world but also learn valuable skills such as empathy, compassion, discourse, and critical reading. As an Intervention teacher, I hope to bring more stories that my students will be able to connect and empathize with while helping them build their literacy skills.
My Project
This story was chosen as the 2018 Global Read Aloud book for 2018. It tells the story of three children who have faced dangers and searched for refuge during challenging time periods across the globe.
Students will be able to read together about children from different times, including today, who have faced struggles and overcome their challenges.
This book also demonstrates that though space and time may serve as barriers, we are living in a time where we are growing increasingly connected to each other. By studying this novel, students will also practice their literacy skills on a high interest text with support.
