My students are amazing! They are energetic, creative, and passionate ten and eleven-year-old children who bring life to our classroom every day! My students enter our classroom in the morning with smiles on their faces, ready to begin their days.
My students like to be challenged and love to learn in a variety of ways.
My students are readers, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and writers, and love to learn more about the world around them. My students love to be engaged in activities and collaborate with their peers.
My Project
Two years ago, my classroom joined the Global Read Aloud project and it was such an amazing opportunity for my students. The Global Read Aloud project is a six-week program where specific books are chosen to be read by students all over the globe. Students are able to connect with classes all over the world to talk about the book they are reading.
Providing students with rich text that they can enjoy and discuss with their peers is so important to the success of literacy in all children.
When we first joined the Global Read Aloud program, we connected with a class in Texas and it was so neat to see the relationships made among the students and the connections they made with one another. I couldn't believe how involved in the book my students were and how much they loved reading it! Almost every day, they begged to keep reading when it was time to stop for the day! Their favorite part of connecting with the class from Texas was through Google Hangouts where they could discuss the books "face to face" in live time. That was so neat! It really opened up an opportunity for my students to think deeply about the text, and ask each other questions about the book.
I would love the opportunity to share the same, if not a greater, experience with next year's fifth grade class. The book chosen for our grade level is "Refugee" by Alan Gratz. In this novel, Gratz shares stories of three refugee kids from three different countries, all with the same mission: to escape. What a great way to tie in history, as well as present day current events. I am very excited to add this fantastic book to our classroom and watch the students enjoy it also!
