Point O'View Elementary's population is a diverse community. Our staff and students come from a variety of cultures and we embrace all our differences. We have a high population of students and parents who are English Language Learners. As a school community, we come together through our common goal of being environmentally conscientious and invested.
Our staff and students started by creating an environmental club called the POV Green Team.
We set up Scoop the Poop boxes for dog owners to use the enclosed plastic bags to clean up after their pet when visiting our school grounds. The team had a raised garden bed installed and expanded it with re-purposed tires and a wood pallet. This year they ran a "Bubbles, Not Balloons" campaign to reduce the release of balloons during events throughout our community.
These students contributed enough to help earn the Pearl School Award for the first time in 2016 and renewed our status as a Pearl School this year. In addition, POV has received the Sustainable Schools Recognition Award both of these years. We are advancing our students' knowledge of how to promote all facets of creating a cleaner world starting with our school and our community.
My Project
Our school has created an environmental club where students have been exploring different ways to make an impact on our planet. A bike rack will decrease our school's environmental footprint. We have been learning about how to reduce pollution in a variety of areas in class and through our Green Team club after school. The members have conducted various campaigns to help eliminate balloons being released and encouraging pet owners to clean up after their pets. These students have taken this information to the rest of the students in our school and to all of their friends and family in our community.
Many of our students and teachers live close enough to our school that they could ride their bikes instead of using their cars.
This would be a great way to promote what we teach in class and in the Green Team club about conserving energy and reducing pollution. We lead by example and our students are always watching.
Our students have embraced the environmentally conscientious culture and have encouraged others to join in. They have created the first recycling center in our school, have maintained the boxes we placed for pet waste removal, and have expanded the school garden to include vegetables. We are excited to see what they will have in store for us next year. These students are our future leaders and they already are leading others to conserve and think about our future.
