Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are empathetic global citizens that have a passion for learning about the world and love school. The class of 20 students has been together for three years and they have formed amazing lifelong bonds with their teachers and each other. This class comes together to help out everyday. The class has made sure that each of their classmates succeeds by forming study groups, creating online meet-ups, and helping each other understand content all on their own! Students provide extra school supplies and snacks to others that can't always afford these items. All of this, they do independently, without teachers telling them to do so.
In addition to being so supportive- these students come into class asking to learn about specific subjects such as World Wars, other countries, global disaster relief efforts, current events, cooking, and how to balance a check book.
We are happy to call Denver, CO our home but with a population increase our area is experiencing gentrification which is creating a unique struggle for our families. The students still come to school everyday ready to learn though.
My Project
As an international studies school our students learn about the world and how empathetic citizens create a global community. My students want to change the world and the best way to do this is to see the world. As a class, we have been working for three years on a project to send students to a different country- Costa Rica. Each student decided if they were going to travel abroad and report or stay in the classroom and digitally connect with their classmates abroad in real time. This whole class partnership will allow students to communicate how other cultures, geographies, and communities in Costa Rica are similar to our own. The class will then share their learning experience with the rest of the grades at our K-8 school.
This project is aimed at highlighting how differences don't separate people but rather similarities bring people together.
The students participating in the project earn high school graduation credit in global citizenship. The trip consists of daily assignments, visiting Earth University, a cultural immersion day, studying the ecology of the Cloud Forest, seeing the geology of an active volcano and practicing their foreign language skills. Yes, our students have been in language classes for three years in preparation for this project! It is our 8th grade class mission to represent our community and country in an empathetic and positive way. For many of the students it will be their first time leaving the state and 90% of the students will see the ocean for the first time in their lives. Without this program, traveling is not an option for our families. Please help our students bring back this experience to our community. It will create individuals that have respect for all people from around our world.
