Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As Speech-language Pathologists of elementary school students, grades Pre-K through 5, we work with many students who demonstrate below grade-level literacy skills and language skills. Our students come from low income homes and do not have the resources at home to improve their literacy skills.
Our students are motivated and excited to be exposed to new things and experiences but don't have the resources to do so.
We are working on creating a cooking club for students grades k-2 but need supplies in order to make this happen. They will learn to make recipes from around the world and be exposed to different cuisines, countries and cultures. The students will work on improving their language skills (e.g. categories, sentence structure, following directions, etc) and will bond with both their peers and teachers all while cooking!
My Project
We are working hard to expose our students to new experiences. We are looking to gather resources needed in order to start a cooking club. Our students love to cook and we would love to help expand their knowledge of different countries, cuisines and cultures. Our students come from broken and low income homes where they have not had many fun learning experiences. Many of them have not been exposed to different foods outside of their own culture but are deeply curious to try new things.
The cooking club would not only expose them to new experiences but improve their overall language skills.
The cooking club would target improving their categorization skills, following direction skills, comprehension skills and social skills. They will make recipes and memories to last a lifetime. They will finish the club with new friendships and a personal cookbook to take home!
