Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 8 and 9-year-old inner city students. 50 percent are English second language learners and all of them work hard! We are a family and they are excited to come, learn and grow. This year our school goal is to be a model urban school. Each and every day will be spent learning and experiencing new concepts and ideas. Our community is very appreciative of all we do for them and this is one project that must be brought to fruition!
Our inner city school district finds it difficult to compete with surrounding wealthy towns.
Our state is one of the wealthiest in the country; however, our district is also one of the poorest. 100 percent of our 22,000 students receive free lunch. This is a strong indicator of the economic pressures our families and our students face every day. This year alone we lost social workers, guidance counselors, literacy coaches, and staff. These projects are essential in making up the resources that we are desperately lacking. Thank you in advance for your support!
My Project
Every day my students work hard in the morning! They work for 3 and a half hours straight on reading, phonics, math, multiplication, division and writing. They anxiously wait for 12:15 lunch and 12:45 recess! Since we live in a cold state in the Northeast, many days in the winter our recess is indoors in our classroom and so students are confined to a small space.
These art materials are what they want and need; they want to spend those 20 minutes being creative with arts and paints and markers.
For example, they have access to our classroom art closet, which right now has about 7 bottles of empty paint! They have been asking for more paint, but it is expensive to order! They want to paint original masterpieces for home. They want to create cards for their family members and teachers using glitter paint and markers. They want to color with glitter markers and draw and color art projects to accompany their writing pieces. They will have direct access to the art closet on a daily basis to pull materials and have the liberty to create!
It is very important that students have a balanced day of work, down time and nutrition, and being right on the front lines, I know what they need! They need these materials to unwind, focus on being centered on their art work and then ready to reset. The balance is key! Almost 80 percent of my students have already made a year's worth of growth according to our district testing, so I know they need to be and should be rewarded for all they do! Please help me provide these invaluable art supplies to keep them motivated and excited to come to school every day and work hard knowing they will have their few minutes of painting time.
