My Students

I teach an elementary self contained class for students with intellectual disabilities. The all of my students are nonverbal and are learning to use picture symbols, communication devices or sign language to communicate. Many of my students also have physical limitations that make accessing the school and classroom environment independently very difficult. Daily instruction in my class focuses on life skills, communication, sensory activities and learning how to be as independent as possible. My students are amazing and love to learn.

My Project

My students need this swivel glider in our classroom to help meet their sensory needs. Our classroom currently only has a small child's size rocking chair that is too small for many of my students to use. Having this large glider would allow my ambulatory students to independently meet their need for sensory input in an appropriate way, and having it swivel would allow them to also be part of activities and instruction going on in the classroom. This glider would also allow for my younger non- ambulatory students to either sit in the glider and be pushed by an adult or be held and read to by an adult while gliding.

Having this swivel glider in my classroom would give my students more opportunities for sensory input and more positioning opportunities.

This gliders durable, safe form and washable cushions will make it a long lasting addition to my classroom.
