Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
N Y State's Dignity for All Students Act provides students with a safe & supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying at school. It includes an awareness & sensitivity in the relations of people, including sexual orientations & gender identity.
A snapshot of our middle school shows a diverse high-need school comprised of about 1100 students in grades 6 to 8.
Half of our student population receives free or reduced priced lunch. Approximately half of our students receive support services in addition to their core classes. Many of our students are not native English speakers. The students have all been impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
My Project
The books I am requesting describe the challenges faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning teens, offers practical advice, provide real-life experiences, exemplify positive role models and list accessible resources and support groups. They will help dispel some of the myths. I hope they will lead to a breakdown of stereotypes and prejudice.
The teenage years are hard no matter what your sexual orientations & gender identity might be.
If these books can help make it somehow easier to cope for some of my students, I want them in my library.
