Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I always gloat that I have the best art students. They are willing to work with the little that we have. They are accustomed to hearing me say, "There's not enough in our budget for that." They are extremely creative and work with what I can provide them with.
My school is a high poverty level school, but that does not slow our students down.
I don't think they know they are considered high poverty, they have learned to make do with what they have.
My art students are very creative and extremely talented.
We have been very fortunate that with the help of Donor's Choose, I have been able to provide art experiences that were once impossible to do.
The students relish in these experiences and their works of art have won numerous awards and accolades.
Art class is the class where many of my students come to escape and release energy. Many stay late into the evening. I would like to continue to provide this experience for them with better and up to date materials.
My Project
For many years now, my students have not had any glazes to work with.
After creating their ceramic pieces, we paint them with tempera paint and spray a gloss over their pieces to mimic the look of glazes.
I have to explain to them that they cannot drink or eat from the pieces they have created because it is not food safe due to the fact that we cannot provide glazes for them.
Many of my students feel cheated of the experience of creating a finished ceramic piece. I would like to provide this opportunity for my students.
