Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Walking into our classroom, you are likely to see students scattered around the room. While a small group is working at my teacher table exploring a concept with hands-on materials, the rest of the class is engaged in independent work, collaboration, or educational games.
My third-grade students are eager to learn but generally come to my classroom working one to two years below grade level.
We work hard to close the gap and meet grade level expectations in just nine months.
My students attend a dual language school in a low-income district where every child receives a free breakfast and lunch. In my room, they learn reading and math in Spanish. In addition to mastering content, students must work hard to read, write, listen, and speak in two languages.
My Project
This project will give my students three new early chapter book series to choose from: Billie B. Brown, Geronimo Stilton, and My Weird School. All three of these series are available in Spanish and are very popular.
By third grade, students WANT to be reading chapter books.
It is a particular struggle for students who are reading below grade level. They see their peers reading chapter books and they want to do the same. Right now, my classroom library has few options for these students. Specifically, I do not have any early chapter books that appeal to boys. Geronimo Stilton and My Weird School will be choices that all students can enjoy.
Getting students into reading now, in third grade, will make a lasting influence on their reading habits. I focus on series because I want students to be able to love one book, then know that there is another waiting for them to read afterwards. This hunger to read another and another is what will keep them reading for life!
