Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
They are single parents, immigrants, workers, and many times those students that others have given up on. My students are wonderful, kind, and courageous. They have big hearts and bigger challenges. They attend our alternative education center in order to improve their lives and those of their families, often their children.
My students often have familial responsibilities disproportionate to their ages including their own children, younger siblings, illnesses without proper medical care, elderly family members, and underemployment. My students personify generational poverty. And yet, they want to make a difference in our world and to help others to make a difference as well. Despite carrying adult sized burdens.
Jennifer is a single mother with a three year old daughter to whom she reads every night. She values giving and caring for others. Her goal is to be a good role model for her daughter.
Bianca is a first generation American. She cares for her younger brothers and sisters as well as helps her parents. She is a first generation American who wants to better her community.
Our students have been inspired by their reading of the book 29 Gifts by Cami Walker, during our daily literacy time. They want to give something that they have crafted by hand to those less fortunate than themselves to show that that they care. As a part of our social studies and civics classes, students will demonstrate leadership and community building through the planning, making, and giving of the gifts. Their goal is to be a conduit for positive energy and caring that will spread throughout our community. The students will work together to enhance their empathy toward those less fortunate by the making and providing gifts to the homeless on a monthly basis.
In Their Own Words
Our goal is make a positive impact on those in need in our community through giving gifts we have made. We want to share happiness and positive energy. We also want to gain wisdom through giving to others. Finally, we want to unite our community through making personal gifts that show we care about others.
As student leaders, first, we will choose who to give the gifts to. For example, we are giving to a homeless shelter and a veteran's hospital. Then, we will prepare the materials. Next, we will make the gifts, such as hats, toys, and jewelry. Finally, we will give to those in need. We will be examples to other students, friends, family, and the community.
Our giving project is important to us because we can be generous and it helps us to gain leadership experience. Our community has many people who need help, support, and care that we will assist through our monthly gifts. We will provide our community with opportunities to come together for positive change.
