My students need a way to express how they feel about the world around them. Our space is in need of updated manipulatives and tools to address their social and emotional needs.
Our Extended Day preschool classes provide students with Autism Spectrum Disorder a highly structured and individualized instructional program. We provide one on one and small group support to our students before or after their classroom session. These kids struggle to communicate their needs and wants in a way that is appropriate. Program goals include increasing cognitive skills, language, social and adaptive skills to maximize student independence. Teaching procedures are based on the principles of Applied Behavior.
We work together to give these special kids a voice and tools to express themselves appropriately.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and with individualized plans for their need of support It is our mission to offer them an optimal learning environment. Concepts such as taking turns and transitioning from one activity to the next are things we provide functional strategies for several of our students. The items I have chosen will support these strategies.
My Project
I am starting in a new classroom, a carved out space in a portable. This space has a lot of potential. I want to maximize my space by making a place to read and a space to work. Looking at the shelves, there are many old toys and manipulatives. I want to get tools in the hands of these special needs kids that are designed and tested to be beneficial for kids like mine.
I want to create a physical environment that helps meet the educational and behavioral needs of my students with autism.
I am very excited to get started. The reading bench I have selected would be just perfect in the space I have. it would replace... the cold floor. The manipulatives I have picked would replace the bin of random objects I currently have.
