Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like to be in second grade? The thrill of learning new things and making new friends? To be able to go home and tell your parents every exciting thing that you learned at school? To feel the accomplishment of learning something new? I work at a title I school. I have the greatest opportunity to teach 23 students from a variety of different backgrounds. Many of my students have some rough backgrounds, but that does not stop them.
My students bring with them a passion to learn that is contagious.
Some of the students have many obstacles that might hinder their learning such as language barriers, two levels below grade level, and no support system outside of school. Even though they might have the odds against them, they overcome and show everyone that, through it all, they are going to do the best they possibly can.
My Project
I want to give my students the opportunity to learn in different ways. I want to give them the choice of where they will learn in my classroom. By having the choice of flexible seating, they are taking their learning into their own hands.
Throughout my educational experience, I personally knew that sitting at a desk would be comfortable for only 30 minutes.
By being that uncomfortable it made me focus less on my school work and more on how much it hurt to sit there.
I want to give my students a choice of where to sit in my classroom during their independent work. I have seen that students are more willing to work when they are given the option of moving. Even if it means they are able to sit on a bean bag during reading to help them focus on their book, or having a floor cushion to sit on when they are working in groups with their math tasks. They become more focused and dedicated. I have seen some of my students best work when they get to decide where to work.
Letting my students have a choice is something they normally do not get to do. It allows them to feel empowered; therefore, they are more willing to focus and continue to do well.
