This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a minority-majority school district with a high level (over 70%) of reduced-priced lunch/low-income population. We have limited funds for extra things that will make the content of English exciting and relevant for this age group. Many of my books are outdated, and I'd love to be able to offer them current books to read that might actually get them excited about reading and learning.

My students are ready to learn, they just need some better tools for the job.

These books will help give them that. They are eager to learn, and I'm eager to help them.

My students don't have access to many new books or books that actually interest them. They are not the typical age that enjoys going to the library on their own. That senior boy who proudly exclaims that he hasn't actually read a book since 6th grade is pretty normal in my classroom. I want to change that. But the books I currently have don't interest him. He wants sports books, quick readers that are engaging - not classics that make him fall asleep. I also have over 30 students who are ELL.

My Project

Using Nicola Yoon's novel Everything, Everything, we will read and discuss the way an author can create a storyline with complex characters and themes without using the traditional writing style. This novel uses multiple genres to tell the story of these two wildly different teens who end up helping each other learn and grow.

My students appreciate and are able to better understand the story when it's not presented in the traditional, lengthy paragraph way.

This novel will engage and inspire them. They will also be using it as a model for creating and expanding their own multi-genre story or research project.
