Giving the Power of Technology to 8th Grade Students

Help me give my students 5 Lenovo laptops so they can gain new literacy, history, and STEM skills in a different way by taking advantage of their interest in technology.

My Students

Our students are 8th graders in an urban school district. A majority of these students are below grade level in reading. All of our students receive free lunches and breakfast. Each of our students face challenges inside and outside of the classroom and despite their challenges these students are hardworking and motivated to succeed.

Most of our students have never sent an email, written an essay, or researched information on computers.

Our students are inquisitive, focused, and love experiencing new activities that cause them to think outside of the box. Our students love using technology and technology is an everyday part of their lives outside of the classroom. We would love to use their interests in technology to begin to show them how it can be used for much more than texting and adding filters to pictures.

My Project

Having this project funded would allow us to incorporate technology into our everyday classroom life. Currently our students have not had the opportunity to utilize technology as much as we would like. Our school has two computer labs for all three grade levels making it challenging to provide ample time for students to explore the wonderful resources and benefits technology has to offer.

With the use of the Lenovo Laptops our students will begin to learn the basics of technology and using a computer to research, explore, create, and learn.

Students will be able to use the computers to create assignments, collaborate in groups, engage in discussions, and motivate independent learning. We hope the use of these laptops will help build confidence in our lower level students by allowing them to use speech to text and have materials read aloud to them. We are also hoping that the use of these computers, as a way to engage students in learning, will inspire them to continue to learn outside of the school.
