I teach in a full day preschool classroom with 24 children. These children live in a low-income area where many of them come to school without proper shoes, jackets, and food. Many of them have overcome the struggles of poverty, broken homes, and being homeless.
However, I believe my students are entitled to have the best education that's desirable for them.
I enjoy working in this area because it is so rewarding. It is remarkable watching my students overcome new obstacles every day. My classroom is like a second home for my students; most of them spend more than eight hours a day with me. They use my classroom as a place for warmth, love, and to escape their troubles.
Regardless of what's happening at home, these children come to school cheerful, eager, and energetic to learn and explore new things.
As a teacher, it is very important for me to keep my children inspired, engaged and passionate about learning because these young children are the future.

My Project
My school is one of the schools in the district that has families impacted by homelessness. Some of my students come to school without a meal, proper shoes and socks. It breaks my heart when I see them at school with no shoes, jackets, beanies and other personal needs. Some of these students spend more than eight hours a day with me because we are a full day full year preschool program. We take at least a 2-hour nap everyday. Some of these children do not have jackets to wear during the fall and winter season so I always end up giving them used ones that other students have left behind. As a teacher, I want to be able to provide my students with the best care and love so that they will be successful in school. I want to be someone who they can trust and turn to when they are sad and lonely. Therefore, I am requesting shoes, jackets, boots and beanies to help those students that are in need. The jackets will help my students stay warm during the fall and winter season. The shoes will help my students to be safe at school while they are running and playing on the playground and it will also help boost their self-esteem and allow them to not have to worry about not having their personal needs met. Having these personal needs met will enable them to feel positive and look forward to coming to school ready to learn every day. Students attending school fully equipped experience a huge boost in morale overall. Homeless and foster children are then less self-conscious and can focus their energy on learning.
