Giving Pre-K a Healthy Way to Get Their Wiggles Out!
My students need activities such as games, bean bags, balancing boards, and platform stilts to keep everyone involved and having fun while getting fit and strong.
My Pre-K students are eager learners, yet many are functioning way below their same-age peers due to the poor environment in which they live. This class has children with special needs therefore they need MORE materials in their classroom to help them reach their highest potential and stay healthy while doing so.
In Title 1 Schools many children come from low income/poverty stricken homes and have little to no exposure to the activities a Pre-K classroom can offer.
I want to give the children in my classroom an extra advantage that they might not normally have. In my Pre-K Classroom there are 15 children ages 4 or 5; some with special needs, many from poor and/or broken homes and all of them want to learn. My students are active little boys and girls but many go home to neighborhoods where outdoor activities are not allowed due to unsafe and violent conditions. Therefore, they sit in front of the television or play video games. With the items in this project my students will have the opportunity to be active at school which improves their ability to focus and exercise their bodies as well as their minds, something that is not in the typical curriculum yet is desperately needed. As an added bonus, they will have fun doing it!
My Project
With the First Lady Michelle Obama's backing, the fight against Childhood Obesity is on many people's mind. However when children live in unsafe, violent, gang riddled neighborhoods parents have no choice but to keep them inside. I want to provide my students with fun activities that will give them ways to exercise their bodies and their minds. Items like the Egg and Spoon game will have them racing on the playground or even across the classroom on rainy days. The Balancing Boards and Bucket Stilts will help all my students but especially my children with special needs improve their balance and muscle control. The games they can create with the Flying Bean Bags are unlimited. All of these items can be used outside as well as in the classroom during inclement weather. And as many of you know 4 and 5-year old children NEED to move! This project will give them the opportunity at school that they cannot have at home.
My sweet little students will come in the door ready to learn and have fun; they will laugh, cry, hug, giggle, play, and learn all in one place: their classroom.
I am eager and ready to help them attain the best foundation for their educational journey that I can. I am a teacher with limited supplies to enhance the environment my students learn in. These children, and many children in the future will benefit greatly from these items.
