Help me give my students an additional robot to increase the time individual students can work on programming as well as an expansion set to allow students to deepen their robotics experience with new structural and mechanical elements.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is located in the Armour Square neighborhood on the southeast side of Chicago. Our school has a rich history and culture where even two staff members have returned to join the staff after graduating as teachers.
My students, while culturally diverse (68 % Asian, 15% Black, 11% Hispanic and 6% White) are very inclusive and supportive of one another in the classroom.
My students are inquisitive by nature and really shine during science class when allowed to work in groups. Eighty percent of our school is considered low-income and forty-one percent are considered English language learners and so it is critical to have instructional materials and supports to help them be successful. With me as an advocate for them and proper supports, they can continue to succeed and flourish.
Providing additional out of school STEM experiences for students is just one part of my job that I really love. Often during the school day, we miss out on opportunities that allow a student to really shine. During the last school year, I was fortunate enough to create an after-school robotics team. It is my hope to grow this robotics team in the next school year. I was able to see the engineering talents of so many students unleashed as a result of their participation in this club.
One thing I learned this year is that having additional robots will allow more students to have a great real-world STEM experience.
With the additional robot and expansion kit, I can guarantee that more students will be able to engage in this experience. My goal is to have two teams next year and these additional materials will help make this a reality!
