Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am an early childhood special education teacher in an intensive needs classroom that serves students ages 2-5, who have Autism! My students are a very energetic group of kiddos, with very big personalities!

My students love music, movement activities, learning new life skills, and sensory play, among many other things!

Our school is a public school, located in Virginia. My students come from all over the city, so we have a really wonderfully diverse group. Because we are a public school, our budget is tight, leading me to purchase many of our school supplies through my own personal funds. I am happy to do this, but being a teacher, my funds are tight, so I am unable to fulfill many ideas I have for my classroom. I would love the opportunity to do more for my students, and I would love having your help to do this. Thank you in advance for any contributions you can provide to help expand and enrich my student's educational experiences!

My Project

First, thank you so much for checking out my project! I teach a classroom for children who are on the Autism Spectrum. Every single one of my students is labeled as being, "non-verbal," meaning that they do not have the verbal communication to express their most basic wants and needs. Currently we are working on using picture communication as a way for my students to express themselves. If my students were able to each have their own tablet for the classroom, we could download communication apps that would completely expand their vocabulary abilities.
