Help me give my students Classroom Library Must-Haves so ALL of my students have access to great literature on their reading level.
I teach ELA and social studies to two classes of fourth graders who are eager to learn. My classroom is not just a place to learn, it is also a place where my students discover that they are able to change the world through the choices and decisions they make in their lives.
The majority of students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning they qualify for at least part, if not all, of the cost of their meals to be paid for by the district due to low parent income at home.
Many of my students come from low-income homes and this can negatively impact their ability to learn successfully.
I teach readers at all reading levels - from above level, to on level, to below level. However, they all come to school wanting to learn with positive attitudes about school, no matter what is going on in their lives. They are hard workers who want to do good things with their lives and they know it starts here in the classroom.
I teach students who read at a variety of reading levels - from 2nd grade to 6th grade. Our classroom library needs an update with books that ALL of my students can read, and are fun and interesting to them. These Classroom Library Must-Haves will give my students - strong readers to special needs students, and everyone in between - books they can independently read and enjoy.
There is nothing worse to a kid than being identified as a low reader by your peers - it brings with it a stigma and makes them feel bad about themselves, as well as lowering their motivation levels.
These Library sets will give my students great novels to read that don't look any different than the on-level and above level readers in my library, but are still attainable to my struggling readers. The sets also include great novels for my on and above level students, so that everyone gets new, enjoyable books to read.
