Hooray! This project is fully funded

I am a seventh- and eighth-grade Social Studies teacher at John C. Haines Elementary School, an urban school located on the south side of Chicago. We are in dire need of technology in the classroom so I'm asking for a grant to fund the purchase of an LCD projector. I am a technologically savvy person and I understand the need for students to learn technological skills, but unfortunately my school is not up to speed. I am lucky to have two computers in my classroom, but with up to 30 students in my room at one time, it is currently very difficult to use those computers to introduce the students to the vast amount of historical resources available on the Internet and to teach them the computer skills they need to know to conduct research and to complete projects and presentations using a computer. Many of my students have computers at home, but most do not know how to properly use word processing software, and none know how to use presentation software such as PowerPoint. In addition, most of my students do not know how to conduct research on the Internet. With an LCD projector, I could demonstrate step-by-step the skills that the students need to learn, then they could take turns at the computers and practice their new skills. In addition, as a teacher of U.S. history, I like to go beyond the textbook and introduce my students to primary sources from the past, such as photographs, documents, music, etc. With the limited amount of copies available at my school, I am not always able to copy these items for each of my students. And even when I can, the copies often come out grainy, unclear and black-and-white. An LCD projector would bring these resources to the students in living color. With the projector, I could incorporate audio clips with images and even show educational DVDs. Most importantly, the projector would be used to teach students to both create and give PowerPoint presentations. Initially, the LCD would be used to teach students how to use the PowerPoint program. After an introduction to the program, students would be able to use the software to create their semester projects and share the projects with their peers. The LCD will aid us in teaching our students to be successful, high school- and college-ready individuals. A very basic projector will provide an incredible learning opportunity for the students of Haines and will help to prepare them for the technological world they live in. In addition to the 130 students I serve, there are at least nine other teachers at Haines who would have access to the projector. Thank you for your consideration.
