Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello! I am a third grade teacher in the Bronx with a classroom of 8 year-olds bursting with ideas and energy! However, teaching my students the skills to express their ideas is one of the biggest challenges that I face. Of all of their subjects, my students struggle the most with writing; it intimidates them because they lack the vocabulary to effectively express their thoughts. One of my big goals for this year is to help my students develop grade-level vocabularies so that they can feel confident sharing their ideas.
In bringing their vocabularies to the third-grade level, my students and I will be battling one of the biggest trends that affect low-income students. A study by researchers at the University of Kansas shows that low-income students know 30 million fewer words by the age of three than children in privileged communities. If this trend is not corrected, the same students will have vocabularies in twelfth grade equal to the highest-performing third graders.
Unfortunately, my classroom lacks the basic tools necessary for vocabulary instruction and practice: dictionaries and thesauruses. I would like my classroom to have a set of ten Children's Dictionaries and ten Children's Thesauruses. These books would also be shared between the other eight third and fourth grade classes on my floor. Receiving these books will be a huge first step in the development of a vocabulary instruction program for my students!
Thank you!
