Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher in a self-contained classroom who promotes the reading of quality literature throughout the school year. When planning my teaching, I always try to choose books that elicit discussion and promote students to read for a deeper meaning. The next book that I would like my students to read is Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. This is a book about growing up and dealing with grief that is written in a way that appeals to kids. Because I have 32 students, I would need 32 copies of the book. We will be reading the book together as a group and taking time to discuss the text. Students will be inspired by the stories that unfold as they read. This book would motivate them and give them opportunities to share their ideas. When our class reads this novel, we will complete literature-connected projects that include character sketches, filmstrips, and time-lines. All of these projects require my students to think critically about the novel that we read and express their ideas through both writing and art. Students take great pride in their work. If this proposal is funded, my students will be given the opportunity to read a wonderful piece of literature that will motivate them to continue to read.
