My students need class sets of rhythm instruments, percussion tubes with guidebook, kazoos and an autoharp book so I can play an autoharp that was given to me by a retired teacher.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Budget Cuts! Budget Cuts! Budget Cuts! It has left us with very little resources outside Language Arts and Math. Kids need the Arts, not only as a way to express themselves but to add a little fun to a very heavy day.
I teach at a Title One school, which means that all my students live near or below the poverty level.
My second graders live in a major metropolitan city in California in the center of an area commonly known as “The Witches Hat”, because of the high amount of gang activity. Despite their many challenges at home, we have perfect attendance almost everyday. They love school and are eager to learn.
My Project
I am requesting a classroom set of percussion instruments, kazoos, tuned percussion sticks (boomwhackers) and instructional books to teach them.
Early musical training helps develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning. Recent studies have shown that musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain known to be involved with processing language. There is also a causal link between music and spatial intelligence (the ability to perceive the world accurately and to form mental pictures of things). This kind of intelligence is critical to the sort of thinking necessary for everything from solving advanced mathematics problems to being able to pack a book-bag with everything that will be needed for the day.
Along with all the academic benefits of having music in the classroom, my students need to know that they are capable of making music themselves.
