This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my first year here at CEKMS. I saw my orchestra twice, before Hurricane Harvey hit the Sheldon area of Houston so I am still getting to know them.

They were so enthusiastic about starting orchestra this year.

The beginners were excited when I measured them for their instruments, the older kids couldn't wait to start making music again. Then came Harvey. The school was flooded and many of our instruments, and all of our cases were lost.

Music is so important to these children. Most of them are on free or reduced cost lunch. Their families depend on the school to provide instruments because they can't afford to purchase, and many can't even afford to rent them.

My Project

Last month, my school was flooded in Hurricane Harvey. C E King Middle School was one of the many Houston area schools that was devastated by this natural disaster. We lost many of our instruments and most of our supplies. If it touched the floor and it was porous, it was not able to be saved.

These supplies will allow my bassists and violinists to play music again.

They can’t play their instruments without them. My students have lost so much already, many of them are still not back in their homes. I want their orchestra class to be a positive, creative outlet for them.
