Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of our English Learners deserve ENRICHMENT rather than REMEDIATION. Our students are the future leaders and caretakers of our beloved communities and they deserve the best imaginable instruction, teachers, and resources.
100% of our students receive free or reduced meals.
They all come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and as a result many face obstacles such as learning difficulties, weak communicative skills, poor academic performance, and other academic related issues. However, our students are eager to both learn and demonstrate progress even if it is at a slower rate than other children in our city.
Many of our students were born in the U.S. Many hail from other countries. We should all be so very thankful that in the United States all children are allowed to lend their indispensable cultural and linguistic commodities to the great distinctiveness of our nation's pedagogy.
My Project
My English Learners need weekly TIME magazines, which will be disseminated based on student reading levels, to support and enhance literacy within the home. If my grant is funded, 33 students will receive weekly magazines that include articles that focus on high interest topics and current events. In order to become successful readers, all children must be afforded a range of appropriate and engaging reading materials that are available both inside and outside the school setting. If my project is fully funded, students who have few literacy resources within the home will receive high-interest and appealing magazines each week.
Donations to my project will ensure that English Learners have adequate and relevant articles and stories to read in their homes each week.
Students will be provided with opportunities to discuss the magazines at school; listening, speaking, reading and writing activities will be developed to connect students to the magazines. More importantly, my English Learners will be able to keep their magazines and take them home to read with family and friends. If my project is funded, all students will receive countless opportunities to either begin or continue along a path to becoming lifelong readers.
