Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Give them what they need!" This is a goal I have tried to live by over the past 34 years in the classroom. Now more than ever there is a "need" for more technology in the classroom. I currently have twenty-four students sharing eight classroom Chrome Books. We NEED more!
Third graders are great!
They are eager to please, anxious to learn, and they enjoy using technology. Brain research states that a students' ability to stay focused is their age plus or minus 3 minutes. For my current group of students their attention span is about 5 minutes on average. However, these same students find it easy to concentrate and stay focused for more than 30 minutes when learning using technology.
Our school does not have math books nor do we currently provide workbooks for reading or math. We recently adopted a computer based program which guides our instruction and also provides individualized tutoring and practice for students based on their individualized performance. Students are scheduled to utilize school wide technology resources in reading and math once per week for each subject. Students need more practice. I teach in a rural school with a free and reduced price lunch percent of 70%. Most of my students do not have access to technology beyond the classroom.
My Project
Although I teach third grade, the students in my classroom are functioning at different levels. In reading the levels span from Kindergarten to Fifth grade. In math the levels span from Kindergarten to beginning third grade. We currently utilize technology effectively to meet student needs and provide differentiated instruction. Unfortunately, we do not have enough technology to allow for as much practice as needed. Most students in my classroom need access to technology on a daily basis in order to bring them up to grade level.
Students currently utilize classroom Chrome Books on a rotating basis through centers which guarantees them access for 20 minutes per week. The classroom Chrome Books are also utilized for after school tutoring. If we had more classroom Chrome Books, it would allow almost half of my class daily access to technology. I would like to work up to a classroom set so all students have daily access to technology for extended learning.
Students who have the largest gaps in their learning and are more than one grade below level also have difficulty attending to tasks.
The programs available through technology are engaging, fast paced, visually appealing, and enjoyable for students. Students are focused and progressing at their own pace. They feel successful. Technology provides the instant feedback necessary to build successful students! All students need to feel successful and have fun while learning!
