Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a Title 1 school in Grand Prairie, TX where 98% of our students are low income students. I have never worked in a school where all they craved was education. Students at my school look forward 100% to coming to school. They appreciate anything and everything that is given to them.
As they are educated, I notice more and more the differences there are between the students in the south and north side of town.
It's such a shame that my students at times cannot receive the resources and opportunities other students get to experience. I want to become that person that creates that avenue for them to venture out and experience these opportunities.
My Project
These books, including Wonder, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and Number the Stars, will be enough for my entire class to have one in their hands. Nowadays we worry more about giving students one-to-one technology verses an actual book. It has been brought to my attention that most of my students in my Title 1 campus has never been read to or has never completed a chapter book. It saddens me to know that our students lack the opportunity to become readers.
So I ask that you let me be that example of reading to my students.
Let me provide what no one else has provided. If my students have the opportunity to receive these book sets I assure you that what they know about reading up until this day will be changed. Their viewpoints towards reading will be geared to finding their passion for literature. I have already begun this school year by reading The Report Card by Andrew Clements and they come into class looking forward to our daily reading time. I'm so thankful I have been given the opportunity to give my students this experience, but with the help of all of you I know I can do even more for them!
