Help me give my students ta new class carpet. This lovely carpet would allow my first graders to have their own personal space for whole group and small group lessons.
I'm am pleased as punch to work with a group of loving and hard-working first graders this year. They come from diverse backgrounds but care about each other as citizens of my classroom and our school. For example, if one of them is struggling with using scissors, a more seasoned "cutter" will assist with nothing but support and the pride that they could help another person.
The phrase "Working Hard Feels Good" is our class motto.
I teach them to understand that nothing comes easy and when you overcome a struggle, it makes your whole heart feel good. I had a little girl who struggled with doubles facts. With the help of her friends, we used cubes to show patterns, games, and songs until her she got it and the first thing she said was, "Boy, that felt good!"
My calling is to work with students who are the underdog. I teach at the highest poverty elementary school in my district so a robust PTA or school budget simply does not exist. I hope that people feel nothing but love for me and my little firsties.
My Project
First graders spend a great deal of their day at the classroom teaching carpet. They learn as a whole group skills and strategies for reading, math, and writing. They explore math ideas at carpet with manipulatives as well as work in their workbooks. They also utilize the class carpet during their literacy rotation time working on their Chromebooks, reading to self, or playing word-building games. Writing is one of their favorite things to do at carpet while lying on their bellies. We have come to the time, where I feel first graders would benefit from having their own space at the carpet. Their own square to keep their materials organized while working. We do so much and their things tend to invade others' workspace. This sense of space would allow kids to have their own personal space that is theirs in the class.
