My Students

I am a special education teacher and work with students with mild/moderate learning disabilities and behavioral needs. Many of my students are 2-3 years below grade level in academics. Many of my students need daily support and intervention in controlling their emotions, remaining on task, and staying positive.

The last couple of years has been very challenging for my students.

They have missed more days of school, have been forced to try to learn in a remote environment, and have endured more stress in their homes due to an increase in financial, safety, and social pressure. My students require more intense ongoing interventions and I'm eager to receive additional funding from DonorsChoose.

My Project

I love giving my kids the opportunity to read outside of school. This is one of the only ways to ensure that students improve their reading and discover the joy of reading. If students read more at home they'll improve their fluency and comprehension. Students must also be given choice about the books they can select. Students can make connections when they get to keep a book as their own. If they can improve their reading, they can help close the gap in some of the skills they have lost due to Covid.
