The library media center is integral to student learning at our Middle School. Many of our students come into the media center to receive academic support, gain access to books and materials they do not have at home, and to use computers to complete and print assignments. My school services underprivileged students grades 6-8. Students come from a working class background with more than half the student population on reduced or free lunch. The media center gives them a place to experience something that can only add to their academic learning.
The library media center is a place where we put books into the hands of students who don't have access to books.
Through our book club, the library is able to provide books in the form of gifts to students. Every book we read is given to the students to keep. For many who do not have books at open, this offers them a chance to build their unique library and expand their love of books by owning their own copies and sharing them with their family.
My Project
Many of my students do not have access to a home library. By providing students with their own books, I am working to build a home library where they can share their love of reading with the family. Through the library book clubs, students have an opportunity to read diverse literature but more importantly discover a love for reading and a desire to own copies of the books that they fall in love with. Students have the opportunity to keep their books and share with their family the discovery of reading and the new worlds that reading takes them to.
