My high school is a rural school on the island of Maui. Our student population of over 1000 is very diverse, with students coming from a range of ethnic backgrounds, economic situations, and abilities. Some students live in remote areas with limited access to computers and the internet.
Over half the students receive free or reduced lunch which makes us a Title I school.
Our school had to adapt to distance learning in March. We have checked out over 500 chrome books for students to use at home during school closures. We now only have a limited number of students on campus, while the majority of students are learning from home. I am the librarian and my goal is to keep the love of reading alive during distance learning and the pandemic.
My Project
The majority of our students are participating in distance learning and are spending so much time in front of a screen. I want them to be able to have a physical book in their hand, to give them the joy of reading away from their computers.
I am so happy I have still been able to offer students physical books from the library, but I would love to purchase some new titles.
Students can place a book on hold through the library website and then I place the book in the front office for pick up. The titles on this list have been requested by students in the past month to either finish a series, expand our graphic novel selection, or for their independent reading in English. Thank you for considering helping put these desired titles in student hands.
