Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of our students at LSS live in a low-income housing project down the road, and more than a few are in-between permanent housing. Many have never seen places outside of our neighborhood, while others have left families on the other side of the world.
Our classroom is a safe, stable place where we focus on using a growth mindset to speak life into academics and beyond.
Though my students are working hard on narrowing the achievement gap, the struggle is real!
My students can do much with little. They are resourceful and creative. And while sometimes less is more, sometimes less is just less. I hope that you are able to help me give a little bit more to my classroom and my students so that we can continue to make learning fun and meaningful... so that what my students learn within the walls of school speaks life into all corners of their worlds.
My Project
Our district recently invested in our students by updating our Reading / Language Arts curriculum, and, WOW, are there a lot of new books and learning materials! Leveled readers, guided reading, read alouds, big books, phonics readers, word work journals, teacher editions, library books, featured author books... Is your head spinning yet?! These are just SOME of the new materials that need a "home" in our classroom.
These new bookcases will beautifully store and display our new reading and phonics materials, making them irresistible to students!
The 3-cube units are the perfect size to hold our clipboards, dry erase boards, and new phonics materials right next to our learning area on the rug. This will reduce the time it takes to gather materials and increase time on learning. The 2-shelf bookcases are small enough to fit under the chalk tray, and big enough to hold the larger shared read books. These shelves will give students access to the materials they need and the ability to be responsible enough to gather the materials themselves!
In addition to all the brand new books, our new reading program also has a wonderful online/interactive component. While we have a projector, we need a cart to hold all our AV equipment! Last year we used an old rolling cart that was only twenty inches high; although it did the job, teacher maneuvering of all the tangled wires and technology from a hunched over position allowed students to consistently participate in unsanctioned shenanigans behind her back. This lovely Luxor cart will hold ALL our technology in one place, and allow teacher to remain standing and aware of ALL student behaviors during learning time.
This furniture will provide key organization in our classroom: a place for everything, and everything in its place... most of the time!
