I teach high school math at an urban public school in our nation's capital. My students are all newly arrived immigrants, hailing mostly from Central America. By the time they arrive in my classroom, these young people have already overcome more hardship than most of us will face in our entire lives. The vast majority of them also arrive with significant gaps in their formal education, making the time they spend with me all the more precious and important.
Even though I'm the one teaching math, my students have taught me just as much about solidarity, perseverance, and grit.
These are some of the bravest (and brightest) individuals I have ever met, and they deserve so much more than society has given them.
My Project
My students enter the classroom with an extremely diverse set of math skills. Some have relatively strong math backgrounds, while others have almost none. Less than one in twenty is performing at grade level. This variety severely limits the effectiveness of whole-group direct instruction: lectures and demonstrations only "reach" a small proportion of students.
Your donation will help me complete my class set of Chromebooks, allowing me to flip my classroom and let students proceed at their own pace while I work with small groups and individuals.
Replacing whole-group direct instruction with recorded video lectures and demonstrations eliminates the need for me to waste valuable class time in front of the entire class. Instead, students will proceed through units at the pace that works for them while I spend my time working with small groups and individuals to ensure they are on track. This can only happen, however, if I have a critical mass of Chromebooks available for students to view my instructional videos. That's where you come in.
Thanks to your generosity, I've already raised enough money to purchase nine Chromebooks for the coming academic year. Please help me purchase six more to complete my class set and ensure that everyone in my class will have access to technology when they need it.
