Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is alive. We currently have six small saltwater aquariums, a tropical tree frog terrarium, and a desert gecko terrarium. Bringing science to life is one of the key ways we engage our 150+ students. The addition of our 150 gallon reef tank will help provide these unique opportunities.
Our middle school students are an interesting bunch.
They are in a state of transitioning from children to young adults. I recognize in them a great deal of potential, often untapped, that can do wonderful things. Our greatest challenge is finding out how to engage these unique individuals and draw out their potential into positive actions. Our school has a policy that says all students are engaged all of the time. One way that we can maximize student interest and engagement is through real life, real world examples of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM.) Bringing a small piece of the ocean into the classroom and into the school can go a long way toward this goal.
My Project
Our students interact with the current saltwater aquariums every day. They take care of the animals, clean the tanks, change the filters and feed the highly diverse aquarium populations. Being in a land-locked state, many of our students have never been to an ocean. The reality is, most of our students will never experience a coral reef in nature. This booster pump will allow us to create reverse osmosis, de-ionized (RODI) water. This is pure water that is mixed with high quality reef salt to provide the best health and happiness of our saltwater inhabitants. The magnetic cleaner will allow our students to clean and maintain our 150 gallon reef tank without reaching their hands into the water too often.
Students need a variety of experiences, it is the only way for them to explore the wonders of our world.
This donation will allow our project to move forward so students can get their hands wet, literally, in an ecosystem drastically different from their own. Our students cannot grow up to take care of our world if they don't learn to love and respect it first.
