My classroom of 35 fifth grade students is in a school of high poverty and all of our students receive free lunch and breakfast here at school. Many of my children are homeless living in shelters or in their cars. I have children who have hard to handle behaviors due to the high stress in their lives. The background knowledge that most of the children have is lacking due to the fact that most of their parents speak another language, are unable to read in their home language, don't English, didn't graduate high school, and most of them are working more than one job leaving many of my kids home alone. Due to the negative outside impact of the world on their lives, the parents and children have other things to focus on.
Many children in the surrounding areas don't have to worry about the daily impacts that my students face.
Things such as witnessing shootings in their apartment complex and having to hide behind a dumpster so they don't get shot. I try to expose them to various activities that they wouldn't be able to access otherwise.
My Project
My students have a pair of guinea pigs as class pets which were purchased by a grant. They have been doing a lot of research about guinea pigs and they have found out that our current cage set up isn't enough space for them. The grant that we got for our pet paid for the initial cage set up and the guinea pig. When I got it I assumed that the grant would purchase the correct size cage and healthiest food. I was wrong although it has been a great teaching lesson about doing the homework and research prior to getting the pet. My student's continue to learn about their new pets and continue to research what is best for them.
I would love to show them that their research has paid off and offers their new pets the proper living space.
We are asking for the correct size cage for them, fleece and absorbent pad so I can make a reusable bedding and eliminated the paper bedding which will help the environment. Also save the classroom and janitorial staff's time since the paper bedding is getting all over the place. A few little cozy nooks for them to hide and sleep in. A brush and dust pan to clean up their new reusable bedding.
