I work in an amazing school with the most amazing children you could possibly imagine. They are creative and love playing make believe. We are located in New York and are in a neighborhood in transition. Our community is still high needs and many children still qualify for free lunch.
Many people think that just becasue the children are in first grade that they should no longer be playing and they should focus only on academics. However, my kids are only 6 and 7 years old and still need to play. There are many ways that social studies, science, and other subject can be taught through the magic of puppetry!
By giving the children the magic of puppetry, we are giving them a platform to act, imagine, experience, and enjoy. They are free to act out scenes of subjects they learn about and scenes from their own lives which they are working through. It would be fantastic to have this be a center in our classroom!
People just like you can help us bring some fun back into the lower grades! School should be fun and children should be able to express themselves in a variety of ways. You can help us do this!
