My students need a table in the classroom to work in small groups and to have conferences with their teacher.
This project expired on May 7, 2011.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Give us a place to work during writing, reading, and math! There is currently no place in our classroom for students to meet in groups or with their teachers. All our conferences happen on the floor, with students' papers strewn about as they squirm to get comfortable and focused on their work.
My third graders are hardworking, imaginative, and motivated to learn and excel.
They are primarily English language learners from South America and Asia who come from low-income families. Despite the challenges our students face, our school is one of just a handful in the city that has received an A rating three years running. My amazing students deserve a physical space in our classroom where they can sit up straight, organize their work, and interact directly with their teacher and peers.
With this table, we will be able to take our work in every subject off the floor and onto a communal work space. The table helps students not only be more organized, but also allows them to take the work at hand more seriously than if they are sprawled out on the carpet. In reading workshop, I will have a place to conference with book clubs, do guided reading, and meet with students with similar goals. In writing, I will be able to teach small group lessons without having five students' papers strewn about on the floor. In math, I will more effectively be able to teach students multiplication and division using manipulatives. Students will also be able to play math games with each other to support their learning. Our ESL teacher will also be able to take advantage of the space. Right now, she has to take over some students' desks and make them work on the floor to meet with her groups!
My students cannot work to their potential without a place in the classroom where they can be comfortable, organized, and focused.
Help us do our best by supporting this project--this table will help this group of students and other classes for years to come!
