My students need a small, portable device (iPod) that they can use for their visual schedules. These students have autism and require these visual schedules to be successful.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Your daily and monthly activities don't stay the same and this goes for my students as well! The ability to quickly and easily change your schedule and the ability to take that schedule with you everywhere is necessary for you - just as it is for them.
I teach at an inner city early childhood center that serves a predominately Hispanic population.
Approximately 98% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. The majority of our students are considered English language learners.
I teach students who have special needs, including some students who are on the Autism Spectrum. These students in particular will benefit from this project.
My Project
When you have students on the autism spectrum who need a visual schedule, changing and modifying those activities on a daily basis can be a lot of work-- making the schedule, printing it off, laminating it, cutting it out, finding the Velcro, etc. This is time and material consuming! It is especially difficult if there is a "surprise" activity that doesn't allow us time to adjust the student's schedule appropriately to minimize disruption.
Having this iPod Touch will allow us to change out activities quickly and easily for our students without using any consumable material. More importantly, it will allow them the freedom and independence to take their visual schedule wherever they go throughout their day. They can transition to the next activity easily and minimize behavioral difficulties in their day.
Technology has made visual schedules easier to manage and is an appropriate long-term solution for these students as they transition through their school career.
This should decrease behavioral difficulties that these students have when there is a change in their routine and will allow them to take their schedule with them throughout their school day. These are all benefits that will improve their success in school and in life.
