Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am one of five new kindergarten teachers at PS 75 in the South Bronx. I co-teach the inclusion class (meaning we have general and special education students) for this grade with another first-year teacher. As new teachers, we have inherited the classroom leftovers of unknown teachers from years past. One of these items happens to be a big, dingy, green rug. My students spend A LOT of time on this rug. They are there for most of our direct instruction in literacy, math, science, and social studies and their little bodies just love to play with the shredding edges and the loads of sand from this rug. However, this is a huge distraction! My co-teacher and I would love a new rug for our students. The rug I have found would not only help by providing a quality meeting area, but it would also help with phonics instruction (it has the letters of the alphabet accompanied by a picture for each letter). The rectangular divisions for each letter would help in creating an easy-to-understand seating arrangement while we are meeting. Finally, this gift to my class would help us reinforce to our students that school is a safe, clean environment where people care about their comfort and learning. Thank you!
