Recently, during a classroom discussion, my students told me that most novels don't hold their attention. So, I brought in three novels from my child's collection and I began reading excerpts aloud. Every student was turned on and wanted to read. The problem is that I do not have a classroom set of novels for each book. This is my first year at Banneker, and it's the only school that I've taught where there are no 8th grade classroom sets of novels to supplement the reading text. We may have a book here or there, but all of my students need to read and increase their reading test scores. Students can lie and say they've read a certain book, but if I'm teaching the entire class the novel and testing for main ideas, vocabulary, etc., there's an 80% chance they will read most of it. My students' reading scores from last year are extremely low. I need to do everything I possibly can to stimulate their motivation to read. I.O.W.A. reading test scores must show a gain or they will not graduate. Currently, twenty-three students need the novel, "THE GIVER" by Lois Lowry. Formal and performance-based assessments accompany this novel. Last year my students wrote their own endings to this novel. The daily discussions were thought provoking! This is only one of three novel experiences I know they will enjoy!
