Help me give my students hands-on activities for my students to do independently. We are always trying to build independence in the classroom and these will help!
Our classroom is located in the heart of southwestern PA. I am a teacher of a lively, life skills classroom servicing 15 students with special needs. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but one thing they all have in common; they all come to school to learn and have fun!
My students need manipulatives to help them learn concepts.
They are hands-on learners versus visual learners. They get so excited building and creating projects.
They have diagnoses such as Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, or intellectual disabilities. Many of them are in wheelchairs and/or are non-verbal. This doesn't stop them though, they give their best each and every day!
My Project
I teach a classroom of 14 life skills students. It may not sound like a lot, but it is when you consider the different academic levels and needs of each student. My goal is to have activities in place that students can do independently while I am doing small group instruction. My students need repetition and hands-on activities to learn and help with fine motor skills. However, we do not always have enough staff or need the students to work quietly so I can concentrate on the students I’m working with to give them all my attention. I believe this project will help do that.
