My students LOVE science and love to be active participants in the learning process. I teach biology to tenth graders in a middle to low income district in Mississippi. The abilities of my students range from gifted to special needs, including ELL students. Most of my students will have the opportunity to go to college after graduation.
Next year our school is going to a 4x4 block schedule. I am trying to find creative ways to teach the same material in a 90 minute time span. My students really enjoy playing a Jeopardy-style game for test review. I make every group submit an answer (instead of letting one person get it right every time.) In the past, my students have used blank copy paper to submit these results.
A classroom set of dry-erase boards and the markers to write with will empower my students and save paper at the same time! It will teach them to reduce the amount of waste we produce, while continuing to give them the opportunity to participate actively in class. I chose the dry-erase boards with a grid on one side hoping that we will also be able to use these boards during lab activities to graph the results. I will be able to see quickly who is on track and who needs a little more help. The boards will also be used by smaller cooperative groups, encouraging students to develop the team work and higher order thinking skills that are vital in college as well as life.
Your help with this project will give each of my students an active voice in my class. They will take part in the learning process and hopefully they will further develop a love for learning that they can carry throughout their lives.
