I work in a Middle School with 1331 amazing middle school students. Our student population is quite diverse from ethnicity to socio-economic levels. The social emotional needs of our students also vary greatly. We have a counseling center, that in collaboration with community agencies, provides much needed mental health support.
We are a Title I school with over 50% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
We provide a breakfast and supper program as well to meet the needs of our students.
Our English Learner population consists of numerous home languages with approximately 14 percent of our students residing in the country for less than two years.
My Project
A high number of students have a variety of mental health needs such as trauma, anxiety, depression, transitions, and gender identity. These circumstances increase their risk factors and ability to cope with school life, creating a high anxiety response that can affect their ability to remain in the classroom.
Some students need an alternative space to regroup and release their emotions.
By allowing students time in a healing environment to process their own emotions they are better able to return to class and resume learning. This healing environment allows students to build coping strategies that lead to resiliency and success.
